Executive Summary: Clean Energy Rail Center Project Introduction

The Clean Energy Rail Center (CERC) is a renewable energy and rail-served industrial park located in Northern Nevada. The subject property is approximately 40 miles from Reno, NV, the second largest city in Nevada. It is also 519 miles from Salt Lake City and is 132 miles from Sacramento, CA.

The CERC project features a very long railroad siding which is perfect for delivering renewable energy feedstock, shipping fuels and building materials. The CERC project also includes geothermal resources for direct use by CERC customers and features abundant water and other utility services.

CERC will be developed in Phases and will provide:

  • Geothermal heat and electrical production for direct use by CERC customers
  • Waste to Energy and Resource Recovery
  • Electrical Interconnect to power grids
  • Diesel Fuel and to Jet Aviation Fuel manufacturing and sales
  • 10,000’ or longer railroad siding
  • FTZ 126

Initial Development Plan

The initial development will begin on Section 19, which has 373 acres of developable land. This is a section of the initial 1,040 acres that will be purchased in Phase I of the development plan. There will be three entrances, a new railroad switch, internal roads, municipal water, fire suppression system, geothermal direct use infrastructure and access to power.

The CERC developers will deliver pad-ready sites with grading, utilities and rails spurs. These sites will be sold to the contracted companies, with the sales proceeds partially funding the development of the next phase of construction. The developers will then also monetize the geothermal and mineral rights held by CERC.

Unique Competitive Advantages of CERC

The Clean Energy Rail Center is unique because of its location in Northern Nevada which is close to the California border and also on the highway and rail lines leading to Salt Lake City, UT. The contiguous large railroad siding off the intercontinental railroad served by Union Pacific (UP) and Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railroads provides for easy access. CERC is near Interstate 80, which is the main highway connecting the states and within an hour of the Reno International Airport. These logistical benefits, coupled with the geothermal resources and power interconnection infrastructure, make this subject property ideal for large rail service customers.
