Ed Dodge, from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY wrote an excellent article about the state of Plasma Gasification and will provide people unfamiliar with this process a good introduction.  (Mr. Dodge explains):

"Plasma gasification is an emerging technology which can process landfill waste to extract commodity recyclables and convert carbon-based materials into fuels. It can form an integral component in a system to achieve zero-waste and produce renewable fuels, whilst caring for the environment."

We see plasma gasification as an integral part of the Clean Energy Rail Center (CERC) as a stand-alone technology and one of many examples of the innovative clean energy solutions we are promoting at CERC. Mr. Dodge describes the clean energy potential for the plasma gasification process as follows:

"Multiple outputs can be produced from a single facility. Heat and steam can be sold, and electricity production can be combined with ethanol or hydrogen production to maximize resources. Hydrogen can be readily produced from syngas by separating it from the carbon and oxygen, while synthetic natural gas can be produced by upgrading the methane content of syngas."

Plasma gasification is an excellent process for reducing waste, creating renewable energy, and removing toxins from the environment. Additional benefits to users at CERC include the ready availability of syngas, process heat and CO2.
